Those who own, rent or let housing have responsibility for the condition of the properties. We provide means tested 'Decent Home Grants' for a wide range of work to improve private sector housing including essential repairs and thermal insulation, works to bring empty properties back into use or provide facilities in shared houses. We give advice to people to improve the energy efficiency of their homes, and offer Energy Grants for those not eligible for our means tested grants.
We also provide Disabled Facilities Grants for adaptations to access into and around peoples homes, and to allow use of facilities.
We routinely inspect 'Houses in Multiple Occupation' (ie premises occupied by more than one household) to ensure they are safe, have adequate facilities and means of escape in case of fire and will investigate all complaints relating to these types of issues.
We will also investigate complaints from private sector tenants where they feel their housing is deficient in any way, or where they are threatened with illegal eviction.
