1 of my tenants has informed me that they have switched both the elctricity and gas suppliers without my knowledge. Are they entitled to do this?

It's my understanding that tenants have the right to switch - they're the ones paying the bills. Not sure if they need to even inform you.

Yes they can switch, but they must tell you who they have switched to.....for the next tenant and finalising meter readings etc....

DO NOT LET THEM PUT IN WATER METERS unless you agree....there is no going back to rates once this is done...

Are water meters a bad thing for landlords compared with rates? It's just one bill over another isn't it, or am I missing the point here?

Tenants do have the right to switch utilities, as the contract is directly with then. As an Agent in Bristol when we check them in we put in a section about changing utility companies - this generally sorts the problem. Linda/Bristol

You can't prevent tenants from getting a water meter installed either .... Which is a great pity.
One of my tenants recently had a water meter installed and afterwards the meter needle was going round when the stop tap was turned off. It turned out that the water pipe under the front garden had been cracked when the previous owner laid foundations for a path. It wasn't covered by insurance because the damage had been caused before I bought the property. So my tenant saves a tenner a month and I had to fork out just under a grand for the privilege. Ouch!
