I get gas certificates every year but I don't remember anyone ever asking to see one. Does anyone check these?

It is prudent to ALWAYS has a valid gas certficiate, to confirm that the appliances meet safety standard. The eviromental health/Health and safety certificate could ask to see these.

'Taking into consideration the the prosecution of Shahid Hussain, who manages a family business that owns and rents-out a number of properties in Burton-on-Trent.

HSE started an investigation into the management of gas appliances in those rented properties after a single man, who lived alone, died from carbon monoxide poisoning in his rented flat in Waterloo Street, in February 2006.

Hussain was, on Friday 20th February, fined £40,000 and ordered to pay £44,500 costs by Stafford Crown Court. The court stipulated that Hussain has to pay the fine by 31st January, 2010 or face a prison sentence of 18 months'.

Obviously it is good practice and the law to have these in force.

thanks for the reply. So I just keep the certificate in case someone asks for it? There is nowhere where the certificate has to be lodged?

If so it doesn't seem to be very well regulated

You also need to provide a copy of the certificate to your tenants...

I've had more than one checked by the local council following a cooker fire
after a tenant, rightly, reported a suspected gas leak to Transco
when registering a student house with the University and Council
I'm sure that when this government gets its way with compulsory landlord registration we will all have to produce them
