The Government expects the move will raise an additional £600million a year by making it easier to keep track of people’s income.
George Osborne is to force small business owners, landlords and the self-employed to file their tax returns four times a year.
The Government expects the move will raise an additional £600million a year by making it easier to keep track of people’s income.
But experts have warned the change will place an extra pressure on firms already struggling with too much red tape.
Roy-Chowdhury, from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, said: “These changes are going to be very onerous.
“It is not just about filling in a form, it is going to be a real burden.”
Businesses and the self-employed will have to file their quarterly tax returns online from 2020 using the HMRC website or apps on their smartphones.
The Government insists the new digital service will make the process easier.
Big corporations are already expected to file their returns every quarter.
Mr Osborne said: “HMRC is making savings of 18% in its own budget through efficiencies.
“In the digital age, we don’t need taxpayers to pay for paper processing.”
The Chancellor said some of the extra money would be ‘reinvested’ towards the fight against tax evasion.
