Freedom of information data show three-quarters of private renters living with poor conditions are not being properly protected by existing legislation because of a lack enforcement.
“The smell caused by the mould and damp was so bad that my clothes stank,” 50-year-old Edie recalls. Edie and her 20-year-old son lived in an unsafe rented two-bedroom flat in Brighton for seven years. She is partially sighted, cannot work, and relies on Universal Credit to pay her rent. “All of my son’s things were ruined.”
