Landlords may soon be able to report tenants who pay rent late to credit scorers and have a black mark put on their file.
Credit reference agency Experian has urged landlords and letting agents to encourage tenants to pay rent through website Credit Ladder.
It passes the cash onto landlords and records if the tenant paid on time.
If a tenant misses a payment, Experian will reduce their credit score and it could be difficult for them to borrow money in the future.
The system could help good tenants build up a track record of payments, as homeowners with mortgages do.
Experts worry tenants sharing will get a black mark if their housemate pays late. Experian denied this.
Helen Saxon, of MoneySavingExpert, says: ‘Tenants who fall behind with rent should be helped, not penalised.’
