Landlords in London should be aware of a social media campaign that is gathering momentum.
London tenants are shaming rogue landlords on social media regarding poor living conditions and high rental costs.
Under the hashtag #VentYourRent, tenants are writing their complaints on paper signs and tweeting them. The images are also being collated on the VentYourRent Tumbler, organised through pressure group Generation Rent.
Of those sharing their experiences, one person who said they paid £1,050 per month for a home in Hounslow containing mould, whilst another tenancy in Camden saw a 12 per cent hike in rent. A third tenant found rats in their property.
Policy manager at Generation Rent, Dan Wilson Craw, said: ‘The candidates for mayor describe London as the greatest city on Earth, but as long as growing numbers of people are paying huge sums to live in squalor, they’ll have a lot of work to do to make that a reality. The hashtag #ventyourrent is unearthing the scale of common problems like damp and mice, all the way up to the most shocking experiences like poisoning, ceilings falling in and bullying landlords and letting agents. When London goes to the polls, the 2 million renters in this city need to make their voices heard.’
Genuine landlords will not mind the ‘rogues’ being ousted, as they only bring down the reputation of the vast majority of conscientious landlords who have a good relationship with their tenants and offer a much needed service, especially in London.
