With renting a home throwing up a whole host of barriers when it comes to making your stamp, SoGlos has rounded up 11 ways to make your rented house feel like home that won’t have the landlord knocking on your door.
Whether your house doesn’t feel like home, beige walls are becoming a bit much or you just want to lease a bit of life into your home, then look no further as we’ve got it covered.
From bold and bright accessories to looking at your lighting, these handy hints and tips will have your rented home looking glorious in no time at all.
1. Plant power
Lease some life into your home by adding potted plants. Bathrooms and kitchens are a great place to start and with potted cactus and other low-maintenance plants becoming all the rage, it’s bound to be on trend too.
2. Mirrors
Whilst many landlords won’t let you drill fixings into the wall, large mirrors are a great way to create the illusion of space and reflect light around a room. For bigger mirrors, many can be safely placed against a wall or in a hall way without damaging the wall behind.
3. Tile stickers
Whilst you may not be able to rip out the tired tiles in the bathroom or make the ones in your kitchen shiny and new, some landlords may let you add non-permanent stickers to your tiles. They’re a great way to add colour or a chic new pattern and the best bit is that you can peel them straight off!
4. Bright accessories
Many rentals are painted in a neutral colour scheme, which although modern, can look a little dull. Why not add some personality with pops of colour using vases, prints and colourful glassware?
5. Layers of texture
If your walls are looking a little bland and cold, add warmth to your space by layering up blankets, cushions and textures to create a cosy and homely feel. Rugs are a great way to make a statement in a room, or alternatively offer the perfect solution to cold laminate flooring.
6. Add some lighting
Whilst you’re probably not allowed to switch over light fittings and hang grand chandeliers, with your landlord’s permission, you can add temporary lighting with a great range of sticky removable spot lights. These can look great under kitchen cabinets and make the space look more inviting.
7. Enhance outdoor space
If you’re lucky enough to have some outside space, make your mark by investing in some large tubs and planters and get creative with some gorgeous flowers and plants.
Bright garden furniture is also a great way to add a popular colour to an otherwise dull space.
8. Candles
Not only do scented candles add a heavenly aroma to your home, but they’re also great for creating a design feature too. Cluster them together on window sills or even invest in some huge pillar candles to cover up dated fireplaces or features you’re not so fond of.
9. Coffee table books
Scout around in charity shops or dig out your favourite books and pile a few up on your coffee table. Grouped with a nice candle or fresh flowers, this makes a great accessory but be careful not to use too many and risk them looking like clutter.
10. Statement furniture
Make a bold statement with some bright furniture that oozes style and personality. What’s more, it’s worth investing in timeless pieces that you can take with you when you move.
11. Fresh flowers
Perfect for a pop of colour, fresh flowers are a must for keeping your house looking and smelling great. Get creative with vases and use large jugs, old milk bottles and even jam jars to store flowers and single buds.
