The Department for Communities in Northern Ireland is issuing a timely reminder to landlords who enrolled or renewed their registration with the Landlord Registration Scheme between January and March 2021. Those who fall into this category are urged to initiate the renewal process promptly if they continue to function as landlords.
Introduced in February 2014, the Landlord Registration Scheme mandates a three-year registration cycle for each participant. Landlords who engaged with the scheme at the beginning of 2021 are now required to ascertain the expiration date of their registration. If they are still leasing their properties, they must undertake the renewal process for an additional three-year term.
Failure to renew registration while actively leasing properties is a breach of legal compliance.
The primary objective of the Landlord Registration Scheme, established to bolster tenants’ confidence in their landlords and enhance landlords’ accountability, is to encourage best practices and provide appropriate advice and assistance. Participation in the scheme grants landlords access to the landlord newsletter and the landlord helpline, both operated by Housing Rights.
Landlords are advised to initiate the renewal process two months before their current registration expires. Neglecting to do so may result in consequences, with non-compliant landlords facing a fixed penalty of £500 or a potential court fine of up to £2,500.
A crucial reminder is extended to landlords to ensure that their contact details are kept up-to-date throughout the renewal process. The Landlord Registration Scheme remains a cornerstone in fostering a responsible and transparent relationship between landlords and tenants in Northern Ireland.
