In a powerful address at the Scottish Greens conference, co-leader Patrick Harvie stood firm in defence of Scotland’s rent cap, emphasizing its significant impact in supporting tenants. Harvie refuted claims that the measure would drive landlords out of the sector, asserting that it had instead provided crucial relief to “many thousands” of renters.
Harvie began by highlighting his party’s unwavering commitment to securing a “new deal for tenants,” drawing from personal experience to underscore the importance of tenant rights. “I know what it is like to be harassed out of a flat by an abusive landlord. I am proud we can deliver that new deal,” he affirmed, while praising the effectiveness of the rent freeze over the past 18 months.
Addressing the power dynamics inherent in private renting, Harvie stressed that housing is a fundamental human right. He lauded the emergency rent freeze as a vital safeguard against exorbitant rent hikes, dispelling concerns about a reduction in available properties during its implementation.
Contrary to sceptics’ predictions, Harvie noted an increase in rented properties in Scotland during the period of the rent cap, challenging the notion that such measures stifle market growth. He acknowledged persistent challenges, such as rising rents between tenancies, emphasizing the need for systemic reforms to ensure housing rights for all.
Looking ahead, Harvie expressed pride in forthcoming plans to establish permanent rent controls in Scotland, aiming to prevent unchecked rent escalation. “We should never accept that rents can simply spiral out of control, satisfying only those who hold power in a broken housing market,” he declared to resounding applause from conference delegates.
Harvie concluded by advocating for tenants’ broader rights, including the freedom to have pets and redecorate, while pledging to bolster tenant protections against eviction. His impassioned defence of the rent cap and impassioned advocacy for tenant rights underscored the Scottish Greens’ steadfast commitment to fostering a fairer, more equitable housing landscape in Scotland.
NetRent Comment
Mr Harvie lives in a world where only he is right and everyone else is wrong. The evidence not only in Scotland but throughout the world demonstrates that rent controls do not work, they drive rents up.
But that doesn’t matter to Mr Harvie. He is hell-bent on a social experiment that has no basis in reality and will ultimately devastate the private rented sector in Scotland. That might well be his hidden agenda, but without a robust, workable alternative he is going to force huge numbers of people into temporary housing at huge cost. That cost will be bourn by Scottish taxpayers and in the health of tens of thousands of people who just want politicians like him to make their lives better not play amateur politics with their lives.
