Are you a self-employed individual or landlord in the UK? If so, it’s time to get ahead of the curve with HMRC’s latest initiative: Making Tax Digital (MTD). HMRC is currently encouraging individuals falling under this category to participate in testing its new digital tax record system. Here’s what you need to know to stay ahead of the game.
What is Making Tax Digital?
Making Tax Digital is HMRC’s ambitious plan to modernize the tax system by moving it online. The goal is to make tax administration more effective, efficient, and easier for taxpayers to manage. As part of this initiative, HMRC is introducing a new digital tax record system that requires individuals to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates.
Who Needs to Get Involved?
Starting from April 2026, individuals with a combined income from self-employment and property exceeding £50,000 will be required to use compatible software to maintain digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC. This threshold is set to reduce to £30,000 from April 2027.
Why Participate in Testing?
The testing phase, currently underway, presents an excellent opportunity for self-employed individuals and landlords to familiarize themselves with the new system well in advance of its mandatory implementation. By participating in the testing process, you can prepare your business and support your clients for a smooth transition when MTD becomes mandatory.
How to Participate?
If you’re interested in taking part in the testing, ensure your record-keeping software is compatible with MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA). HMRC provides a list of compatible software online for reference.
Landlords looking to participate must be registered with HMRC for an Agent Services Account (ASA) and utilize the digital handshake to gain client authorization.
Information Session
To provide further insights and guidance, HMRC is hosting an online information session this Friday from 2-2:45 pm. The session will cover testing details, participation instructions, and offer a Q&A opportunity.

As the deadline approaches, it’s crucial for self-employed individuals and landlords to stay informed and proactive about the changes brought about by Making Tax Digital.
