On the eve of polling day, the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA), alongside other prominent landlord organizations, has issued a joint public statement urging the forthcoming government to pass the Renters (Reform) Bill as a matter of urgency.
The statement, endorsed by influential industry bodies including the Leaders Romans Group, Grainger PLC, and the British Property Federation (BPF), emphasizes the critical need for the incoming administration to prioritize rental market reform in the aftermath of the general election.
This call to action follows a vigorous campaign by the NRLA aimed at drawing attention to key issues that, in their view, should be high on the agenda of the UK’s major political parties.
In a unified declaration, the NRLA, Grainger PLC, BPF, and Leaders Romans Group articulated the challenges faced by renters, landlords, and letting agents amid ongoing uncertainties surrounding the proposed abolition of Section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions. The statement reads:
“Renters, landlords, and letting agents have faced five years of uncertainty over plans to end Section 21 ‘no fault’ repossessions. With all the main parties’ manifestos committed to delivering rental reform, it’s time to bring the issue to a conclusion. Only this approach will enable the sector to look forward and unlock the investment in new housing that renters desperately need and deserve.
“The Renters (Reform) Bill to end Section 21 was well on its way through Parliament before the election with broad support, and Labour has said it could have ‘happily’ agreed it in the ‘wash up’ period.
“The best way for the next government to achieve their objectives would be to resurrect this Bill as a matter of urgency.”
As the nation prepares to cast its votes, the landlord groups’ statement highlights the pressing need for decisive legislative action to stabilize and improve the rental housing sector.
