Affordable social housing has become scarcer, leaving many households with no choice but to rent in the private sector. However, due to the pandemic, subsequent job losses, and rising rent prices, in some areas 40% of tenants now need benefits to help to pay their monthly housing bills.
According to recent estimates, the percentage of homes provided by councils has fallen year on year, falling to 7% in 2018.
