How to get your tenancy deposit back – and what to do if your landlord refuses you

Nearly a fifth of tenants renting from a private landlord say they have waited more than three months to get their deposit back

Finding the cash for a hefty deposit on a new rental home can be a major barrier to moving in. But it’s even worse if you don’t get it all back at the end of your tenancy.

Almost a fifth of tenants renting from private landlords say they have waited more than three months to get their deposit back, a survey by mortgage lender Nationwide has found.

The survey of more than 2,000 private renters also revealed that a further one in 25 of tenants (about four per cent) waited for more than six months to get their cash back.
