Landlords of houseshares who are grappling with the cost of living crisis will not pass on Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s energy bills discount to tenants, experts have warned.
Mr Sunak this week announced that all households will receive a £400 energy bills discount from October. Previously, this discount was only £200 and had to be repaid. Now, the requirement to pay it back has been scrapped.
But Polly Neate, of housing charity Shelter, warned that this policy will leave Britain’s poorest tenants “at the mercy of their landlords.”
